Nessie Chases Bride on Honeymoon

“”Gill dashes for cover as the Loch Ness Monster makes a rare appearance”"   The lengths some people will go to to ensure they get that special photograph from their honeymoon.

Winter is now well and truly here and today saw the first snow of the season.  We are closed until around the beginning of March but there are lots of jobs to keep us busy over the winter.  If you are in the area over the next month, here is a link to let you know what is happening.  Looks very busy at Urquhart Castle 27th – 29th December.  http://www.nesslink.net/events.php

Our family will all make it  home for Christmas this year, so we will be having a very special one.  We wish a very happy festive season to all the new friends we have made this year, not forgetting  all those whose company we have enjoyed in the past.

See you in the New Year when I will be able to give you a planner of what’s on in the Highlands for 2012.

Autumn on the way

Time is going by so quickly.  We missed the tail end of the hurricane last week thank goodness.  Autumn has arrived very early in the Highlands this year and already the trees are shedding leaves and turning to lovely autumn colours.  Ian  and Rowan and I have just picked the last of the plums from the old tree and have made some apple and plum jam for breakfast.  The guests seem happy with it.

National papers are full of pictures of a ship’s echo sounder showing strange features at about a 25 m depth which some are claiming must be Nessie.

The Loch Ness Marathon takes place the first weekend in October so that will see a surge in visitors to the area.  The World Porridge Making Championship takes places as usual in Carrbridge on Sunday 9th October sponsored by the porridge company which I use.

Looking forward to a nice autumn and autumn fruits for bramble jelly and elderberry wine and hoping the weather stays good for our October guests.

Nessie spotted off Tigh Na Bruach beach

Hey Gill what's that?

After all the chaos in the early part of the year it was great to eventually get back on track and ready for the season.  We are now getting into our busy time and thankfully the weather is picking up.  The group of wild boar which had been roaming around the locality have now moved on and there are a family of pine martins with four young ones just in the neighbours garden.  Haven’t managed to be in the right place at the right time to get a picture but hopefully one of these days.

Excitement with our recent visitors from the USA.  They had a great time staying here with their Scottish friends and below is what they had to say -

Hi all,

We met our friends, Gillian and Ian from Edinburgh, at a B&B on the shores of Loch Ness. Nessie surfaced almost immediately upon our arrival and I snapped this photo.  It was unbelievably exciting!  I’m honored that our B&B hosts, Catherine and Ian, asked for a digital copy to use on their website.  They said they had not seen a clearer photo of her in the 6 years they have lived here.

I’m saying nothing!!

Welcome to our 2011 guests

As usual at the start of the year we have been on holiday to visit our son, daughter in law and 3 grandchildren in China.  The weather is always colder than here but when it never rains and the sun shines all day it doesn’t seem so bad.

Getting ready for the spring season and our first guests, but we’ve had burst pipes  and storm damage which means mess and workmen so struggling against time.

The weather’s fine at the moment.

The Stone Seat

Have had terrible snow like the rest of the country up here in the Highlands.  Thankfully it has just disappeared but more is forecast for Thursday.  Here’s hoping it doesn’t come to much.  We are now closed for the season and won’t be reopening till Mid March.  We have lots of work to do around the house and the garden so it won’t really be a rest.    However we are off to China to see our son and the grandchildren so that will be a great time ( only downside is we are swapping – 10’s for about -25’s-30’s so it will be winter woolies out there as well.

Anybody walk up to the stone seat behind the hotel.  You won’t recognise the road from this picture, but Rowan loves it.

Have a great Christmas everyone and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2011

Storm in Invermoriston

How many guests have admired the old, old tree next to the car park,

admired it’s big purple pine cones, and taken home a photo.

Sadly we had a terrible storm last Wednesday and the old tree is no more.

The Old Tree

Did you have a walk along to the garage and then down the path and across the bridge over the little river.  Now you will need climbing tackle to get over the 100 ft fir tree that crashed from the bottom of the garden, through the bridge and right up over the path to the garage.  Along with another six trees around the place, Ian is going to have a very busy winter, and enough firewood to last till the next millenium.

Crashed through the Bridge

Then blocked the road to the garage

Glenurquhart Highland Games

The weather is looking very promising for the Highland Games today at Drumnadrochit.  Making an appearance will be the actor Timoathy Spall (Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, Auf Wiedersehen Pet) and his wife, Shane, who have been filming on Loch Ness  as part of their adventures for Spalls At Sea, a documentary about life aboard their 50 foot Barge as they travel around the coast of Britain.

Loch Ness Lifeboat

Our inshore Loch Ness lifeboat stationed at Drumnadrochit and crewed by volunteers has a very busy life.  There is always someone in trouble for one reason or another and the guys and girls do a fantastic job.  Please read the attached notice and if you are around on the 31st July, drop into Dores and give them your support.

“Meet the Lifeboat” day at the Dores Inn Car Park on Saturday 31st July 2010 between 10am and 2pm.
We will have the RNLI Sea Safety Roadshow in attendance and the lifeboat team will carry out a rescue display and be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the lifeboat, the equipment and training that allow us to help keep the waters of Loch Ness safe.

Summer has arrived ….

It's a hard life sunbathing

Summer has arrived and the weather has been great for weeks now.  The eagle seems to have disappeared from Sron Na Muic (the hill behind the house) but Ian has been keeping his eye on 2 buzzards who are nesting just a mile up the road on one of his and Rowan’s regular dog walks.  He has been watching the male taking back food to the nest, but never has his camera when it’s needed.

Had to dig Rowan’s sunshade out of the garage for the summer as she likes to sunbathe but gets very hot.

The Highland Games in our area kicked off today at Invergarry and the following are details of the three closest to us during the summer.

Loch Ness RNLI

The latest lifeboat drama on Loch Ness happened literally on our doorstep.  From the house we heard a boat’s engine on the water making a terrible noise and came to the conclusion that a passing holiday boat had become stuck on the sandbank off the river mouth beside us.  Sure enough a while later the boat drifted into our bay accompanied by the Loch Ness lifeboat with Martin Douglas at the helm, which had obviously pulled it free.  Nobody was hurt and eventually the boat was able to limp off slowly in the direction of Fort Augustus.
